Does Water Aid Fat Loss?

water fat lossPeople on weight loss/fat loss diets often carry bottled water with them to prevent hunger and speed their progress. Almost every diet plan– high-or low-carb intake– instructs people to drink more water than usual. One diet plan said, “Simply put, the more fresh water we drink, the healthier we become.” According to urban legend, drinking water may make you feel full, which prevents overeating.

Water may also help the body get rid of metabolic waste products. Surprisingly, there is little evidence that drinking more water than normal assists weight control. In fact, the National Academy of Sciences rejected the widely repeated advice that people should drink eight glasses of water a day, saying most Americans will take in enough water if they simply let thirst be their guide.

Drinking water is useful for weight loss/fat loss if it replaces high-sugar drinks, but drinking more water does not speed fat metabolism and has only a small effect on metabolic rate. Once again, there is no easy, painless way to lose fat other than to eat less and exercise more.
