Calcium and Dairy Foods Speed Fat Loss
Calcium supplements promote weight loss/fat loss. People with low calcium intakes (less than 500 milligrams per day) have trouble losing weight compared to people who consume the recommended calcium (1,200 milligrams per day).
University of Tennessee researchers, led by Dr. Michael Zemel, found that subjects on a low-calorie diet who consumed three helpings of dairy products per day lost more weight and inches from their waists than subjects taking calcium supplements or a placebo.
Subjects taking calcium supplements also lost weight, but not as much as those consuming the dairy foods. Dr. Zemel stated, “If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction.” The dairy group consumed approximately 1,500 calories per day (500 fewer calories than normal) and had a calcium intake of 1.2 to 1.3 grams per day from three to four servings of fat-free or low-fat milk, hard cheese and yogurt during the 24-week study. The dairy group lost 50 percent more fat than a low-calcium control group and about 20 percent more than a calcium um-supplemented group.
The study showed that eating non-fat or low-fat dairy foot (containing whey protein) as part of low-calorie diet will speed weight loss/fat loss.

[...] The study examined people’s intakes of dietary calcium, supplemental calcium and total calcium (supplements plus diet) to discover which forms of calcium were associated with weight change. The researchers found “dietary calcium alone had no significant effect on 10-year weight change,” but that women who took calcium supplements saw some improvement. The study was funded by grants from the U.S. National Cancer Institute. [...]
